Christmas Market at Blutenburg Castle

Blutenburg Castle was built in 1433 and is home to the International Youth Library today. On our 90-minute tour, we will get to know the castle and learn more about its beginnings and history, alongside the International Youth Library’s mission and tasks following the end of World War II. The tour will take us to the reading room, the hallway gallery, then to all of the permanent exhibitions, and finally the medieval chapel – a masterpiece of late Gothic style. Because the annual Blutenburg Christmas Market takes place just that weekend, we will also have the opportunity to enjoy a cup of Glühwein in the beautiful courtyard of the castle.

Led by professional artists and instructors as well as educators, the kids will sing, play, and bake without language barriers while their parents can enjoy some free time at the Christmas market. Typically Munich: Wondrous Christmas Markets

Every year, countless tourists flock to Europe – and Germany in particular – to experience the wondrous, cozy atmosphere of the numerous Christmas markets. Typically referred to as Christkindlmarkt or Weihnachtsmarkt, the markets make you realize that there is perhaps no better way to muster up excitement for the holiday season. With a hot mug of Glühwein in one hand and a lip-smacking piece of gingerbread in the other, it suddenly becomes very easy to forget about how cold it is. Luckily, you are well positioned to experience this tradition with its many facets right here in Munich. That is why we have been quick to compile an overview of the best spots the city has to offer in December.

Straying away from the obvious choice that is the market located right in the city center, at Marienplatz, there is another traditional, and even cozier option surrounding the Chinesische Turm. For one, it is equipped with horse carriages, so why not succumb to enjoying a tour of the English Garden while you appreciate a historical vehicle? There are also several stalls for children, such as a little hut where a ‘grandmother’ reads stories and a separate one where a ‘grandfather’ leads a joinery workshop. Another city classic is the Christmas Village at Munich’s City Palace, in German Weihnachtsdorf in der Residenz, which can be found in the inner courtyard of the Munich Residenz, right by the Odeonsplatz. It offers live music and an animated puppet theater.

If you are looking for a more unusual experience, you might want to visit the Christmas market at the Wittelsbacher Platz which brings you right back to the Middle Ages. Torches galore and staff dressed in medieval clothing, offering their service to you, will have you dreaming of another time. A new movement, however, is the market located at the Alte Utting – a trendy event location with a ship suspended over a bridge. You can shop all kinds of crafts as well as some hippie-esque items while enjoying a daily changing cultural program. Finally, another alternative option is the charming Fairytale Bazar (Märchenbazar) right at Leonrodplatz. Similar to the Christmas market in Schwabing, it exhibits an artistic and creative vibe and is also one of the markets to enjoy cuisine that is international in style, with a lot of vegetarian and vegan options on hand.

Typically Munich, pt. 2: Public Transport Reform

Whether you live in the suburbs or close to the city center: If you use Munich’s public transportation system on a regular basis, it is crucial to note the big changes that will be implemented on December 15, 2019. One of the biggest shifts is that the stops located in the City of Munich will be brought together into a single zone, marked as zone ‘M’. The numbered zones are now all outside the city bounds, making ticketing significantly more straightforward and carefree.

Although one cannot necessarily expect a fee reduction or change, this is possible if you meet certain criteria. For example, if you previously purchased a monthly ticket for rings 1 to 4, you can expect a significant fee reduction as these zones now all fall under the singular zone ‘M’. This change may also be relevant if you previously made use of an annual pass or the JobTicket. Children aged between 6 and 14 may continue utilizing a multi-journey ticket (Streifenkarte) and only use one ‘stripe’ per ride. Older children are eligible for reduced fares, with a new special multi-journey ticket being launched for those aged below 21. Find more information on tickets & fares on the MVV website
