Notes

Typically Munich: Starkbierfest

In case you have been assuming that you have to wait another year in order to consume copious amounts of beer by visiting the Oktoberfest and that this is the only way to go, then you might not yet be familiar with some other parts of Munich’s culture. Granted that the Bavarian capital has plenty of other ideas – and excuses – for fully enjoying the exquisite local beer, the Starkbierfest (Strong Beer Festival) is another one of the larger cultural events that should find a spot in your social calendar.

Following the already festive carnival season, the Paulaner am Nockherberg turns into a site of more joyous celebration as part of the Starkbierfest. This year, the festival will be taking place between March 13 and April 5. The history of the festival can be traced back to monks enjoying strong beer. This special type of beer has indeed been invented on the Nockherberg. One of the great differences to the Oktoberfest is that Starkbier is not served in the regular one liter glass beer jugs but rather in the so-called Keferloher beer steins. Nevertheless, there are some parts of it that will remind you of the Oktoberfest in a more distinctive manner, such as the presence of the band Die Kirchdorfer.

Although most people assume that the alcoholic content of Starkbier is higher, there is more to know about the recipe that will make sure you understand how special this experience is. Starkbier also has a higher amount of dissolved solids such a sugar and starch, which makes the enjoyment of this beer more rich and indulgent. Make sure to try it, but also expect it to knock you over in a different way than regular beer.

Finally, it is important to note that the Starkbierfest is celebrated in different locations throughout the city, with the Paulaner am Nockherberg being the most popular and central one. The halls in the cellar are regarded as particularly beautiful, which together with some authentic live music makes for an exciting atmosphere. In addition, you may also find celebrations happening at the Löwenbräukeller and Augustiner Keller among others.
