Rundfunkbeitrag – the license fee
for public broadcasting service in Germany
What many foreigners do not know
and often find unusual, is that when you move to Munich – or Germany in
general –, you have to pay a license fee for the public
broadcasting service.
Whenever you turn on the TV or
radio, you can choose from a variety of channels. In Germany, the
companies which operate these channels are divided into two main
categories: private broadcasting and public broadcasting companies.
Private broadcasters finance themselves through advertising but the
public broadcasting companies, such as ARD, ZDF, and BR, are operated
by the state and financed through license fees.
If you talk to Germans about the
Rundfunkbeitrag, you may get an annoyed grunt as a reply. Many Germans
pay the fees reluctantly. Here is why: every household in Germany has
to pay 17.50 Euro per month, no matter how many people live in it and
no matter how many electronic devices you have. Previously, only
households with a radio, a computer, or a television at home had to pay
the contribution. Therefore, the change is perceived as unfair by
many. However, these fees fund the daily news and the television
program as well as the radio stations. This ensures the cultural
diversity of public service broadcasting.
Please note that the license fee
will not be automatically withdrawn from your account. You have to
register at rundfunkbeitrag.de. If you are moving within Germany, you have
to notify them your of your move and provide the new address, which you
can change online. In case you leave Germany and give up your house or
apartment, you will have to unsubscribe online as well. Please note: if
registration for the license fees is not done within a month, you are
committing an administrative offence and can get fined.
But be also aware of scammers who
send fake payment requests. Whenever you receive a payment request,
which appears to be from the ARD ZDF
Deutschlandradio Beitragsservice, first check your contribution
number (Beitragsnummer) or give them a call to be on the safe side.
