Hiking

Munich is an excellent location for trekking in the Alps, as you have mountains, valleys, lush green meadows, crystal-clear streams, and lakes at your doorstep. So no wonder, hiking is a popular leisure activity in Bavaria to enjoy a spectacular nature and get refreshed on the weekends.

A diverse range of tracks can be reached from the city within a bit over an hour and even by public transportation. Many paths of the Alps were originally used by cattle drovers, bandits, and the military. Nowadays, they are well organized, carefully signposted, and more accessible thanks to a network of mountain refuges or alpine huts so you don’t have to carry a whole lot of gear or food when setting off for a hike. Most mountains are also surrounded by lakes, so hikes can easily be combined with a refreshing swim.

If you are new to hiking, you can start with shorter routes that are manageable in a couple of hours. However, please always check the weather conditions before setting out, to make sure you know your route and your abilities and carry suitable emergency supplies.

Below you can find some daytrip hikes that are close to Munich and quite moderate.

At Lake Tegernsee you can find some really nice and easy tracks that are suitable for all hikers. The Riederstein, for instance, is one of the most popular peaks for summer and winter hikes. On its summit, there is a small chapel and you have a stunning view. The one-hour ascent is pleasant to walk and therefore an ideal short hike for the whole family. It leads past the Riedersteinhaus am Galaun where you can enjoy a delicious Bavarian lunch.

Neureuth is another wonderful short hike. The ascent will take approximately one hour and you can either take the well-developed forest road or the steep path up. At the top, the Berggasthof Neureuth and an amazing view will be waiting for you. Both tracks can be started from Tegernsee train station.

The Herzogstand is a classic trail that is a bit more challenging. The hiking trail up takes about two hours and begins at the Herzogstandbahn parking lot. A serpentine route will lead you uphill to the Herzogstand hut with a spectacular view of the Walchensee, Karwendel, the Wetterstein range, and the Tirolean mountains. The route continues about 30 minutes past Martinskopf peak through a mountain pine forest to the Herzogstand’s summit cross and to the wooden pavilion.

The Blomberg is a family friendly mountain with a great view of Starnberger See, Ammersee, and the Isar Valley. There are more than 20 kilometers of hiking trails offering tracks for every age and fitness level. It also features Germany’s longest summer toboggan run, with more than 1,200 meters of track which is a fun alternative to get down the mountain. Hiking at the Blomberg is possible in summer and winter. There are two summer toboggan runs and a climbing forest.

The Brauneck, Lenggries area between Loisach and Isar is one of the most beautiful excursion destinations in the Bavarian Alpine uplands and features many hiking trails. There are also many mountain inns offering wonderful views and delicious food. And if you are looking for more than hiking, it offers ideal conditions for climbing or paragliding, and hang-gliding.
